BIS Certification BIS stands for (Bureau of Indian Standards) is a means for providing third party guarantee of safety, quality and reliability of products to the client. BIS Certification is intentional in nature; however, the Government of India has made BIS certification compulsory for certain products taking into concern public health.

Which products are covered by the BIS certification?

The list is continually being increased and already includes a wide range of different product groups such as construction products and materials, dairy products, consumer and office electronics, household products, and raw materials. It is to be assumed that BIS will continue to take over more than product certification areas from other authorities.

Which Types of BIS Certification Schemes

In India, the Government provides BIS Certification for products under many different types of schemes as follows:

Normal Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers   – The candidate is required to submit the BIS Certification application with required documents and demanded fee. After submitting the application, an introductory industry evaluation is carried out by a BIS officer. When samples are tested in the industry and also drawn for independent testing. BIS certification is provided when the sampling procedure is acceptable. After this whole process, BIS Certification is expected to be granted within 4 to 6 months of submission of application.

Simplified Procedure for Domestic Manufacturers – In the simplified procedure, the candidate submits a test report of the sample from a BIS certified lab along with the request for BIS Certification. Then the test report is satisfying, then a verification of the industry premises is carried out by a BIS Officer. BIS Certification is granted, when the verification of the BIS Officer is satisfying. Under this method, the license is expected to be granted within 30 days of submission of BIS Certification application with the needed documents and test report.

Tatkal Scheme: Those operators who need BIS standard mark mandatorily as per Government information can obtain BIS license under the tatkal scheme. Under the tatkal scheme, the application is prepared within strict timelines and the entire time for processing is specified as 30 days. I addition, an application held under the Tatkal Scheme will be processed on a preference basis to adhere to the strict time norms.

ECO Mark Scheme – BIS License for eco-friendly things are granted in a scheme separate from the normal BIS Certification method. Eco-friendly products should submit to further requirements specified in the Indian Standards to qualify for the ECO mark. The system for the grant of licence is however related to that of the Domestic Manufacturer’s scheme.

Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme – Overseas candidates/foreign manufacturers are granted a licence for the use of ISI mark below separately created scheme within 6 months period.
